Abstract:Na Osnovni šoli Rodica poučevanje izbirnega predmeta nemščina že vrsto let ne poteka zgolj v učilnici, z učenjem novih besed in lekcij, temveč poskušamo nemščino učencem približati celostno z izkustvenim učenjem.

Title:Experiential Learning of German : Motivation for Lifelong Foreign Language Learning
Abstract:At Rodica Primary School, the elective subject German has, for many years, been taught through methods that go beyond the confines of the classroom and traditional vocabulary drills and lesson-based instruction. Instead, we strive to introduce the language to students holistically through experiential learning. In this way, students come to understand that a language is not merely a collection of words formed into sentences, but something much greater – language integrates culture, history, time, and place. Each year, we collaborate with the Goethe-Institut Ljubljana, a cultural institution of the Federal Republic of Germany that promotes cultural exchange, education, and international cooperation, and supports the teaching of German. We take part in their workshops, where students explore in engaging ways what connects us, how Germany and Slovenia are similar, and what makes each country unique. Students learn that our shared cultural history, stretching back to the Middle Ages, is evident in the holidays we celebrate together. They explore both the similarities and differences in how these holidays are celebrated in Germany and Slovenia, discovering how such traditions can enrich our lives. In this article, we also point out how German has had a significant influence on the Slovenian language due to historical and cultural connections. This is evident in words borrowed from German, such as names of places, foods, and more. As a result, our students not only gain language skills but also grow through the experience of discovering other cultures and people, remaining motivated to learn the language throughout their lives.
