Abstract:Prispevek osvetljuje temo trajnostno naravnane družbe v otroški literaturi z upoštevanjem gradnikov bralne pismenosti.

Title:Reading picture books for a more sustainably oriented society
Abstract:The paper highlights a sustainably oriented society as a topic in children’s literature by taking into account the components of reading literacy. Sustainable development education is equally a life-long process as reading literacy. Therefore, the picture book by Liis Sein and Gerda Märtens, My city, has been chosen to help children understand the concept of sustainability and the role of individuals in its pursuit, something which already begins to develop in the preschool age. The impacts of humans on the environment, conveyed through contemporary children’s literature, can serve as an important starting point of life-long learning in the education of pre-school children towards becoming responsible and informed individuals. A multi-modality analysis of this picture book has shown that the illustrations impact the understanding of the story and change or more precisely present the basic morphological characteristics of the text, while special attention is also paid to the pressing challenges of an overwhelmed natural environment and to promoting inclusive sustainable conduct in urban centres. This was also highlighted during literary matinees or meetings with the writer and future educators, students of pre-school education at the University of Maribor, and the children from nearby public kindergarten. A case study involving part-time junior students of pre-school education (n = 13) was conducted. An analysis of the content of answers demonstrating a wide semantic field of understanding of comprehensive reading was conducted, serving as a case of cross-curricular integration that can significantly contribute to the development of the components of reading literacy and a sustainable future.
