Title:A new wildlife monitoring app in Slovenia : a pilot evaluation of data quality and use

Abstract:Wildlife monitoring is crucial for successful conservation and management of wildlife populations. To support modern wildlife monitoring approaches in Slovenia, we developed SRNA, a nationwide citizen science appli- cation that collects additional metadata on several terrestrial vertebrate species. The app is designed for two groups of citizen scientists, hunters and other nature observers. To foster learning, it features a photo-based wildlife identification quiz and species identification guides. This pilot study evaluated app use and data quality with two aims: (1) to assess users’ ability to identify wildlife species from photos, focusing on taxa expected to be challenging to identify, and to test whether identification accuracy varies across mammal groups; (2) to analyse wildlife observation data submitted through SRNA. Users were successful in identifying several distinctive species but had some difficulty distinguishing between certain mustelids, and between golden jackal and grey wolf, indicating priorities for targeted educational campaigns. Biology-related educational background facilitated identification of mustelids and, to a lesser extent, canids. In its first year, SRNA collected 1633 observations via 742 reports, predominantly of European roe deer. Hunters and nature observers contributed complementary data: differences were observed not only in the number of reported species and amount of data they provided, but also in reporting patterns across biogeo- graphic regions, reporting rates, and the average delay time between encounters and submissions. This study demonstrates that SRNA provides promising complementary data for wildlife monitoring, but also highlights data quality limitations (biases and verification issues) that must be taken into account when using SRNA data.

Abstract:Spremljanje prostoživečih živali je ključno za uspešno varstvo in upravljanje populacij prostoživečih živali. Za podporo sodobnim pristopom spremljanja prostoživečih živali v Sloveniji smo razvili SRNA, nacionalno aplikacijo državljanske znanosti, ki zbira dodatne metapodatke o različnih vrstah kopenskih vretenčarjev. Aplikacija je zasnovana za dve skupini državljanskih znanstvenikov: lovce in druge opazovalce narave. Za spodbujanje učenja vključuje kviz za prepoznavanje živali na podlagi fotografij ter vodnike za določanje vrst. Ta pilotna študija je ovrednotila uporabo aplikacije in kakovost podatkov z dvema ciljema: (1) oceniti sposobnost uporabnikov pri prepoznavanju vrst prostoživečih živali na fotografijah, s poudarkom na taksonih, za katere se pričakuje, da jih je težje določiti, ter preveriti, ali se natančnost prepoznavanja razlikuje med skupinami sesalcev; (2) analizirati podatke o opažanjih prostoživečih živali, zbrane prek aplikacije SRNA. Uporabniki so bili uspešni pri prepoznavanju večine vrst, vendar so imeli nekaj težav pri razlikovanju nekaterih vrst iz družine kun ter pri razlikovanju evrazijskega šakala in volka, kar nakazuje prednostna področja v ciljno usmerjenih izobraževalnih kampanjah. Izobrazba s področja biologije je izboljšala prepoznavanje vrst iz družine kun, v manjši meri pa tudi vrst iz družine psov. V prvem letu je SRNA prek 742 vnosov zbrala 1633 opažanj, med katerimi so prevladovala opažanja evropske srne (srnjadi). Podatki lovcev in drugih opazovalcev narave so se dopolnjevali: razlike so bile opažene ne le v številu vnešenih vrst in količini posredovanih podatkov, temveč tudi v vzorcih vnašanja po biogeografskih regijah, stopnjah vnašanja ter povprečnem časovnem zamiku med opažanjem in vnosom le-tega. Študija kaže, da SRNA zagotavlja obetavne dopolnilne podatke za spremljanje prostoživečih živali, hkrati pa izpostavlja omejitve, povezane s kakovostjo podatkov (pristranskost in težave s preverljivostjo), ki jih je treba upoštevati pri uporabi podatkov, zbranih z aplikacijo.
