Abstract:Today's technologies are no longer independent of one another but constantly overlap. The technology opening new business opportunities is the technology of radiofrequency identification. With the help of specific hardware and software, this method enables non-contact reading, identification, and data tracing or transfer. It improves performance, security and reliability of business processes. Moreover, it helps to reduce the expenditure. To continue, libraries have expressed a growing interest in introducing the technology of radiofrequency identification, where this technology promises not only faster rental process, more organised book collections and less injuries of the librarians due to repeated movements but also a better protection from thefts and control over unreturned and misplaced books. The research, performed in Slovenian general and university libraries showed that the librarians have to be well informed in order for the library to decide on the introduction of a technology. In addition, the decision also depends on whether the technology optimises the business processes and does not present an invasion of privacy. However, due to high prices of radiofrequency identification system components, the introduction of this technology still has not become economically justified.
