Title:Selected fundamental concepts related to the ethical use of generative artificial intelligence in education
Abstract:This chapter defines selected key concepts relating to the ethical challenges of using generative artificial intelligence in education. It describes plagiarism as a key ethical challenge, where AI tools that enable content creation can pose a risk to academic integrity. It outlines some of the ethical challenges related to intellectual property, copyright and data sharing with AI. The paper also draws attention to bias and discrimination in the generated content, which may arise from biased data underlying AI, and the problem of generating false data and information. It also identifies the problem of anthropomorphisation of AI, the over-reliance on AI and the importance of critical thinking in the use of AI. Finally, the chapter addresses the environmental and societal implications of the use of AI, such as high energy consumption and the risks of increasing social and economic inequalities. The analysis shows that a holistic approach is needed to harness the benefits of AI in education while reducing its ethical risks, covering (at least) the aspects addressed.
