Title:The Role of Music in Primary Paediatric Care
Abstract:Music has played an important role in human life since ancient times. Its positive effects on the holistic development of children and their well-being in stressful situations are well documented. This study investigated how Slovenian paediatricians at the primary care level perceive the role of music in outpatient settings. A triangulation of research approaches was used, with qualitative analysis as the central method, complemented by quantitative data. Data were collected using a questionnaire containing both closed and open-ended questions. The sample consisted of 102 paediatricians from all statistical regions of Slovenia. The quantitative part enabled a frequency analysis of the answers, while the qualitative content analysis revealed deeper attitudes and opinions of the respondents through open coding. The findings show that most paediatricians perceive music to encourage children’s cooperation during paediatric examinations, as it helps reduce restlessness in stressful situations and supports various areas of development. Calming music is most often found to be effective. Although paediatricians mostly use it intuitively, the results suggest potential for the systematic integration of music into outpatient paediatric practice. In addition to its effects on children, positive impacts were also observed on parents, healthcare staff, and the overall working atmosphere in the clinic.
