Abstract:The article discusses the methodological challenges of monitoring, identifying, and addressing the vari ability of the Slovene language used and perceived as standard by the Slovene community in Italy (SIPS) and the relationship of these practices to the general Slovene standard (SSPS). Based on a review of pre vious research, from earlier sociolinguistic analyses to contemporary corpus approaches, the authors draw attention to the methodological challenges of studying uses that are perceived as standard only by the local community (the so-called ‘SIPS non-SSPS uses’). In the last decade, two tools have been deve loped to monitor variability and raise awareness of Italian-Slovene language contact phenomena – the language assistant Loris and the concordance tool STIKit – which provide insight into specific com munication practices in the area inhabited by the Slovene community in Italy. The present study uses a sample comparison to examine the extent to which these tools capture the characteristics of language use among a specific population, namely students at one of the Slovene-language schools in Italy. The results show that the existing tools detect less than half of the analyzed phenomena, which (despite the limitations of the sample method) suggests the need for their improvement and for the integration of corpus and sociolinguistic approaches in the study of linguistic variation.
