Title:Compulsory Elective Subject in Primary School Tourism Education as an Opportunity to Incorporate Elements of the Green Transition
Abstract:In this article, we conclude that the curriculum, teaching materials, and the presentation of the subject of Tourism Education on the websites of primary schools (n = 100) in Slovenia show that elements of the green transition, sustainability, the development of skills for the Anthropocene, and the corresponding interdisciplinarity are not adequately included in the subject or are only included in individual cases and, even then, to a limited extent. An update of the curriculum is therefore necessary. A forward-looking teacher who is aware of the need to develop appropriate competences in times of environmental crisis will understand that sustainability in tourism is much more than a general platitude about preserving the environment, and will therefore seek out relevant elements in the local environment and incorporate them into teaching in an interdisciplinary and problem-solving manner. In this way, Tourism Education could become part of the toolkit that young people will urgently need in the coming decades.
Keywords:tourism education, green transition, anthropocene, communicating the environmental crisis, sustainability
