Professional competences of preschool teachers for working with gifted young children in Slovenia
Sonja Čotar Konrad, Mojca Kukanja-Gabrijelčič, 2015, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Recognizing giftedness in young preschool children presents an important challenge to all educators. Because giftedness needs nurturing, the aim of the research was to emphasize the importance of gifted children's right to adequate educational opportunities, which will stimulate the optimal development of their potentials. In order to achieve the latter, appropriately qualified preschool teachers are needed, in both diagnostic (the identification of the preschool gifted children) and educational field. The main purpose of the study (N=180) was to analyse professional qualifications and attitudes of preschool teachers in the area of identifying and working with gifted children from age 2 to age 6. The non-experimental causal method was used. The results of the research in Slovenia show the following problems: preschool teachers are inadequately informed about the issues concerning working with gifted children; they tend to have low self-competence in identifying personal characteristics of gifted children and in the appropriate use of teaching strategies when working with them; they stress the necessity for further education and professional training in the field of gifted children education.

Validation of the inclusive competences scale for educators (InComSEdu)
Tina Štemberger, Vanja Riccarda Kiswarday, 2016, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The study aimed to construct and validate the Inclusive Competences Scale for Educators (InComSEdu). The basis for item generation was the "Profile of Inclusive Teachers", a document developed by the European Agency for Special Needs and Inclusive Education. Items were measured on a 5-point Likert scale. In order to test the validity and internal consistency of the scale, item analysis, exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis and Cronbach's - were used. On a sample of Slovenian educators factor analyses proved the InComSEdu had seven subscales: Team working and cooperation with others, Implementing knowledge about inclusive education and support, Reflecting on and learning from inclusive practice, Optimising challenges and approaching interdisciplinary, Accepting professional responsibility for each child's development, Promoting resilience and professionality, and Empowering children's life skills. Results indicate that InComSEdu is a valid and reliable instrument for the evaluation of inclusive competences among educators.

Primary school teachers' views on their autonomy
Jurka Lepičnik-Vodopivec, 2016, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: In the paper we discuss primary school teachers' views of their own autonomy. In the introduction we present the theoretical premises and the views of different authors. In spite of the different views on understanding teacher's autonomy, it can be summed up it is a complex, multi-layered and important factor of teacher's activities. It appears at different levels and relations in the education process. Here we highlight the significance of decentralisation of school that influences teacher's authority and tasks, as with decentralisation the power and responsibility of decision-making is transferred from the national to the school level, which means the significance of school autonomy-and thus also of teachers' autonomy-is strengthened. In the second part the results of an empirical study carried out on the sample of 104 primary school teachers from 30 randomly selected basic schools in Slovenia are presented. We found primary school teachers estimate they are autonomous in their work. To the largest extent teacher's autonomy is influenced by regulation in education, by the curriculum, and by professional qualifications, and the least by parents. They link their own autonomy to independence in making decisions about choosing the methods of teaching and the selection of teaching resources they use at the performance level of teaching. According to the estimate of surveyed teachers they have less autonomy in selecting textbooks, which can be attributed to enforcing the policy of joint procurement and to the decisions of school authorities regarding the introduction of the latter into school practice.

Subjective theories and main problems of preschool teacher working with gifted child
Mojca Kukanja-Gabrijelčič, 2016, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: In this paper, main problems regarding preschool teacher's subjective theories, problems and professional development in working with gifted children are presented. The results of the empirical research show the following problems: preschool teachers are inadequately informed about the issues concerning identifying and working with gifted young children; they tend to have low self-competence in identifying personal characteristics of gifted children and in the appropriate use of teaching strategies when working with gifted children; they stress the necessity for further education and professional training in the field of gifted children education. In addition to various possibilities of further education and in-service training, there are some issues that should be arranged on the national level, e. g.: empowering preschool teachers; providing teaching materials, teaching aids and special - didactic recommendations; shorter training workshops and others

The attitudes of educators towards picture books with homosexual content
Anita Lečei, Tina Štemberger, Majda Cencič, 2016, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Inclusion refers to the respectful acceptance of diverse modes of being, including sexual orientation as one of the means of its multiple expression. Aimed at the portrayal of the current trends in a highly diversified society, picture books with their explicit homosexual content are growing in popularity. It is evident, however, that the pragmatics of their kindergarten use is still controversial, largely motivated by teachers' attitude to homosexuality as such. The purpose of the presented study, undertaken among the teachers from the Istrian County, was to determine educators' orientation towards homosexually-charged picture books and identify opinion differentiating factors influencing their perception, such as teachers' service length or the degree of the respective urbanization or rurality of the area they inhabit. A questionnaire was devised as a means of data collection. The research results indicate that the pool of 127 respondents was neither fervently pro-or against both the picture books with homosexual content and their kindergarten use as such. Although with no significant statistical differences in the service length, teachers with more extensive in-service experience find it easier to accept homosexual content of the picture books in question but are more reluctant to incorporate their use into their teaching practice. As expected, the higher the level of urbanization of the area educators represent, the more accepting they are. Conversely, the more rural teachers' immersing surrounding, the lower openness to diversity on their part, translating into their diminished readiness to use the discussed homosexually explicit material. Close analytical reading of the study results reveals that for the previously mentioned inclusion to become an integral part of the teaching practice, the system of education has to undergo major changes to provide professional development opportunities for teachers and equip them with necessary tools for the skilled handling of such sensitive matter as homosexuality proves to be.
